Value-for-money Chirashi Don in Singapore!
Chirashi is a classic dish of sashimi pieces over a bed of vinegar rice. It comes from the word 散らす (chi-ra-su) meaning “to scatter”, as in scattering fish bits all over the place. The bara-chirashi is a variation using cooked ingredients. We heard about a place called Sushiro in Thomson plaza selling cheap and good Bara Chirashi Don, and we decided to head down to give it a try!
We arrived at about 7.30pm and as you can see, the queue is incredibly long. Probably because it is featured in every food blog in Singapore. Be prepared to wait for about 40 minutes or so!
The interior of the restaurant looks like traditional Japanese store. There is also a Sushi counter at the back.
There is a wide selection of options on the menu, such as different kinds of Sushi, Chirashi Don etc. We ordered Tamago Mentai, Bara Chirashi Don and Galzed Duck with Onsen Egg. One thing to praise about is their service is really quick! Food were being served even before I have finished setting up my camera.
Tamago Mentai 卵 明太子
Tamago Mentai ($3.80). Japanese Omelette with Glazed Mentaiko. Mentaiko is the roe of Alaskan Pollock, which is the orange thing on top of the egg in the above picture.
Bara Chirashi Don ばら ちらし 丼
Bara Chirashi Don ($12.80). An assortment of Seafood Cubes on sushi rice. There are Salmon, Salmon Roe, Tuna, Octopus and Prawns in this bowl of goodness. The variety of ingredients, packed with fresh and quality of the seafood in this rice bowl makes it a must-get whenever you visit this restaurant.
Glazed Duck with Onsen Egg
Glazed Duck with Onsen Egg ($14). Smoked duck with sweet sauce positioned in a circle, with runny yolk Onsen egg in the middle. Place the egg in your mouth and let it burst!
Conclusion
If you are into Japanese Tuna Rice Bowl, Sushiro is definitely a place to try! With great quality of food at the cheapest price possible, there is absolutely no reason why you should not miss this.
